Tween Photography: Capturing the Magic Between Childhood and Teen Years

Let’s talk about tweens. You know, that delightful age where they’re too old for cartoons but not quite ready to give up their stuffed animals. They’re navigating middle school drama, experimenting with their personal style (hello, neon hair streaks), and discovering the fine art of the selfie. It’s a whirlwind, and honestly, they’re trying to figure out who they are—all while deciding if they’re too cool to hug you in public.

Tween years can be an awkward time, both for kids and for their parents. They’re in between childhood and teenage independence, which makes this stage challenging to capture in photographs. That’s why it’s so important to invest in professional tween photography. Sure, your tween has a phone full of selfies, but trust me, there’s something magical about letting them see themselves through someone else’s lens—someone who sees them as more than a Snapchat filter.

At this age, tweens are often their harshest critics. They compare themselves to airbrushed influencers and feel like they don’t measure up. This is where I come in. As a photographer (and former middle school teacher—so, yes, I’ve seen it all), my goal is to help tweens see their unique beauty, inside and out. During a session, I’m not just snapping pictures; I’m building confidence. I want them to walk away thinking, “Wow, I look awesome,” because they genuinely are.

Tween photography sessions are also a chance for parents to preserve this fleeting moment in time. Before you know it, they’ll be asking for car keys and college brochures. These photos capture the sparkle in their eyes, the hint of who they’re becoming, and yes, maybe even a bit of that pre-teen sass. And let’s be real—when they’re 25 and raiding your attic for childhood memories, these photos will be priceless.

The tween years deserve to be celebrated, awkwardness and all. Whether they’re into sports, music, art, or just figuring it all out, my sessions are all about showcasing what makes them unique. Let’s freeze this in-between stage, so you both have something to look back on when the selfies get replaced with graduation photos.
